How do I chat with someone?

  • Direct friends chat
  • Chat now
  • Group chat

What is the Group Chat?

Group chat is a great way to quickly get some practice or get into a conversation. All italki members can participate in group chats. The public groups that are listed in the social bar are related to languages that the user is studying. For example, if you speak English and are studying Spanish, you will have both Learning English and Learning Spanish listed in your groups.

Chat Groups are a great way to quickly find some language partners on italki. The easiest way to find a language partner is to simply to enter a group of the language that you SPEAK. These groups are generally full of people who are interested in meeting people like you. From here, you can see some people's profiles and also get a sense of how they communicate.

Compatible Browsers

We strongly recommend using Firefox. Firefox is an open-source browser that is the second most popular browser in the world (after Microsoft's Internet Explorer). Firefox is the most stable browser for using the chat from Mangospring.

Unfortunately, the chat bar does not work these internet browsers.

  • Internet Explorer 6
  • Maxthon
  • Chrome (will be fixed soon)

Tips on how to make friends through chat

  • Be polite (always)
  • Be curious
  • Try to ask questions
  • Chat to people directly

Rules for Group Chat

  • Do not insult other members, or their backgrounds
  • Do not discuss religion or politics
  • Do not discuss dating, relationship or sexual issues
  • italki users that break these rules, may be removed from italki at any time
  • If you see a user breaking these rules, please notify italki

italki is primarily a place to learn a language, and we hope that people will have fun and make new friends while improving their language skills.
