Introduction

Finding a language partner is one of the most useful things you can do on italki. When you're learning a language, practicing speaking and listening with a real native speaker is fun and educational. It's also a great way to make new friends.

In general, a language partner is someone who has complementary language skills to you. For example, if you speak English and are learning Spanish, then you should find someone who speaks Spanish and is learning English.

On italki, you can find language partners easily. Just follow these steps:

• Get a list of potential partners by using the language partner search.
• Request to be italki friends

After you connect, you can communicate in many ways:

• Using the italki chat
• Writing italki messages
• Posting on the blackboard
• Using other communication tools like Skype

In general, we think the most successful language exchanges involve both sides talking an equal amount in their native languages. This means if you would spend 50% of your time speaking your native language, and 50% of your time speaking the language you are learning.
